Scenic Carpentry Apprentice
Full-time (40 hours per week) - based in Purfleet, Essex
The Royal Opera House produces some of the best opera and ballet in the world. Our employees who work behind the scenes are as important to our opera and ballet productions as those who perform on stage.
As part of our innovative scheme to provide apprenticeships across our back-stage departments and with the generous support of the Derek Butler Trust, we are pleased to offer a Scenic Carpentry Apprenticeship.
The carpentry workshop builds and refurbishes scenery for The Royal Opera, The Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet. The apprentice will be based at our purpose-built, production workshop on the High House Production Park in Purfleet, Essex.
The apprentice will also spend time at the Building Crafts College in Stratford, E15, where they will study for either a Level 2 or Level 3 Bench Joinery Apprenticeship. The time at college will be spent in blocks throughout the two years. There is also the opportunity to spend time in the scenic workshops of another venue or a commercial scenic workshop in the second year of the apprenticeship.
While previous experience is not essential, applicants should be able to show:
- Previous woodworking experience (this could be at school, college, a hobby, in a workplace etc).
- An aptitude for working with your hands using various materials.
- An interest in technical theatre.
- Ability to work well within a team.
- A practical approach to problem solving.
The successful applicant will be paid £14,290 per annum, with a 2.5% rise after successful completion of the first 12 months. The apprentice`s college fees will also be paid by the Royal Opera House. Applicants must be 18 years old or over on 1 September 2015 and have work authorization for the UK.
Our apprenticeships are intended for those wishing to pursue a vocational pathway into backstage theatre, and offer the opportunity to achieve Level 2 and/or Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to GCSE (grade A* - C) and A Level). If you already have a degree or other equivalent higher education qualification, you will not be eligible for consideration for this scheme.
