Scenic Metalwork Apprentice

Fixed term contract for 3 years (September 2015 - August 2018)

Full time (40 hours per week) - based in Purfleet, Essex

The Royal Opera House produces some of the best opera and ballet in the world. Our employees who work behind the scenes are as important to our opera and ballet productions as those who perform on stage.

As part of our innovative scheme to provide apprenticeships across our backstage departments and with the generous support of the Derek Butler Trust, we are pleased to offer a Scenic Metalwork Apprenticeship.

The apprentice will be based at our purpose built, state-of-the-art workshop facility in Purfleet, Essex. The production team at the workshop is responsible for building and refurbishing scenery for The Royal Opera and Royal Ballet companies and Birmingham Royal Ballet.

The three year apprenticeship will combine time at the workshop with one day per week spent at Prospects College, Basildon where the apprentice will study for an Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship. In the third year of the apprenticeship there will be the opportunity to spend time in a commercial workshop or the scenic workshops at another venue.

While previous experience is not essential, applicants should be able to show:

    • Some experience of metalwork or welding (this could be at school, college, a hobby, in a workplace etc).
      • An aptitude for working with your hands using various materials.
        • An interest in technical or backstage theatre.
          • Ability to work well within a team.
            • A practical approach to problem solving
              • Applicants must have 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade C or above including English and Maths.

The successful applicant will be paid £14,290 per annum, with a 2.5% rise after successful completion of the first 12 months. The apprentice`s college fees will also be paid by the Royal Opera House. Applicants must be 18 years old or over on 1 September 2015 and have work authorization for the UK.

Our apprenticeships are intended for those wishing to pursue a vocational pathway into backstage theatre, and offer the opportunity to achieve Level 2 and/or Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to GCSE (grade A* - C) and A Level). If you already have a degree or other equivalent higher education qualification, you will not be eligible for consideration for this scheme.
