Technical Theatre Apprentice
Full-time (48 hours per week) - based in Covent Garden
The Royal Opera House produces some of the best opera and ballet in the world. Our employees who work behind the scenes are as important to our opera and ballet productions as those who perform on stage.
As part of our innovative scheme to provide apprenticeships across our backstage departments and with the generous support of the Derek Butler Trust, we are pleased to offer a Technical Theatre Apprenticeship.
The apprentice will be based within the Technical Department of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This department is responsible for the management and running of the main stage and all the other technical areas of the Royal Opera House.
The apprentice will study for a Level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship in Technical Theatre (Sound, Light & Stage) on a day-release basis. The qualification will be delivered by LeSoCo, but the majority of the learning required to achieve the qualification will be undertaken within the workplace.
While previous experience is not essential, applicants should be able to show:
- An interest in working backstage.
- Some kind of backstage experience (e.g. school, youth club, college) or experience of working as an electrician or with sound and music.
- Ability to work well within a team.
- Good practical and problem solving abilities.
- Ability and interest in learning new skills.
The successful applicants will be paid £17,148 per annum with a 2.5% rise after successful completion of the first 12 months. The apprentices` college fees will also be paid by the Royal Opera House. Applicants must be 18 years old or over on 1 September 2015 and have work authorization for the UK.
Our apprenticeships are intended for those wishing to pursue a vocational pathway into backstage theatre, and offer the opportunity to achieve Level 2 and/or Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to GCSE (grade A* - C) and A Level). If you already have a degree or other equivalent higher education qualification, you will not be eligible for consideration for this scheme.
