At the Royal Ballet and Opera (RBO), we want many more people to enjoy and engage in exceptional ballet and opera. RBO Collections acquires, preserves and provides access to an extraordinary archive that records the history of the institution since 1732. The Collections represent a journey into our diverse history; documenting the artistic, performance, and organisational activities of the three theatres that have stood on the Covent Garden site.


We are currently seeking an experienced Archivist to join us on a fixed term maternity cover contract to assist in the preservation, management and development of, and engagement with the Collections. They will join the RBO Collections team, which comprises the Head of Collections, three Archivists and an Archive Apprentice.


This is an exciting opportunity to develop your experience within a busy archive with a growing and very diverse range of materials. The successful candidate must hold a post-graduate qualification in Archives and Records Management and have demonstrable experience of working in archives, ideally special collections.


In addition, our ideal candidate will have experience in:

  • Appraising and acquiring new material to enhance collections.
  • Managing large collections, including working with external contractors and identifying conservation needs.
  • Cataloguing archives and objects to recognised standards and experience of cataloguing databases, ideally Adlib/Axiell Collections.
  • Delivering public engagement activities and social media content to promote archives and history.
  • Providing reader services and assisting researchers.
