Job title:
Application Engineer

Permanent
Up to £55,000 per annum based on skills and experience
Full time; 40 hours per week
Based in: Covent Garden, London

The Royal Ballet and Opera continues to lead the way in opera, ballet, music and dance both live on stage and through multiple digital platforms, from live streaming to worldwide cinema screenings. Our Covent Garden theatre has been at the heart of London and British cultural life for three centuries. We are home to two world-class Companies: The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera.

The Royal Opera House describes the place we work, not who we are. The whole is always more than the sum of its parts - we may be a House, but three quarters of our audience experience what we do outside this building. While our Covent Garden theatre is the nerve centre, the impact and influence of the organisation can be felt in every corner of the country, and around the world. Keeping us connected to audiences across the world are our technology team, who enable us to do our jobs onsite by providing the network, infrastructure and systems for all departments to work effectively.

We are now seeking to add an Application Engineer into our Technology Team to build capacity at a busy time for business-critical transformation projects. In this role, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of applications, and their associated infrastructure, ensuring high availability, sustainability, and efficiency of our organisation. You will design, build, maintain and monitor both the operation and data of enterprise applications across the organisation working in the cloud as part of a wider development operations function.

This is an exciting role for a candidate with demonstrable applications experience who is motivated by delivering high levels of data security and best practice and is passionate about ensuring the RBO is continuously evolving our applications portfolio. Our ideal candidate will be an experienced professional and team player, who is keen to mentor junior team members and is able to demonstrate:

  • Experience in developing and executing comprehensive strategic roadmaps for cloud infrastructure, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and future scalability to critical business needs
  • Technical skills for designing, building, and testing complex or large-scale data products, and leading teams for data integration services.
  • The ability to select and implement appropriate technologies for resilient, scalable, and future-proofed data solutions
  • Experience in designing metadata repositories, understanding various tools for metadata management, and providing guidance to less experienced team members
  • Experience in designing, coding, testing, and documenting programs, and scripts, and collaborating on specification reviews.

Relevant AWS certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional) are highly desirable so please reference these in your application if you hold them.

The Royal Ballet and Opera is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment in which everyone can thrive. We particularly welcome applications from those who are from a global majority background and/or those who are disabled, as they are under-represented within our organisation. As a Disability Confident Employer, we guarantee to interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential minimum criteria for our vacancies.
