Footwear Technician


Starting salary: £35,600 per annum

Permanent contract

Based in Covent Garden, London

The Royal Opera House Costume Performance team provides costume support to the artists of the Royal Ballet, the Royal Opera and visiting companies. Working closely with artists and production teams, technicians undertake all performance related costume preparation for changeovers, rehearsals and performances as well as managing a small team of dressers to ensure artists are prepared, on time and to the highest of standards.

We are seeking to recruit a Footwear Technician to join our Costume Performance Team to work across both Opera and Ballet. You must be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience in working with ballet, opera or theatrical footwear in a performance context.
  • A qualification in footwear design or manufacture from an accredited source would be an advantage.
  • Good working knowledge of preparation and sewing techniques, fabric technology, footwear fitting, painting, dyeing, repairing and modification techniques.
  • Experience of footwear-specific stock control and suppliers/ makers.
  • Demonstrable understanding of Heath and Safety relevant to the provision of specific dance/theatre footwear (pointe shoes/historical footwear) and able to contribute to risk assessments.
  • A good knowledge of ballet or opera repertoire and heritage productions an advantage.
