About

The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden is one of the world`s busiest theatres and home to world-class ballet, opera and theatre arts. Volunteering with the Royal Opera House is a unique experience and a way to be part of one of the world`s most celebrated theatres.

Welcome Host volunteers support our Visitor Experience team to provide excellent customer service for visitors and audience and help to ensure that the ROH is a welcoming environment for all.

We actively encourage people from diverse backgrounds to volunteer with us. This includes those who are currently underrepresented in our organisation including disabled people and those who are ethnically diverse.

As a Welcome Host volunteer, you could...

  • Gain skills and experience in customer service, front of house operations, problem solving, teamwork and communication.
  • Meet like-minded people and gain confidence in a supportive environment.
  • Go to rehearsals of Royal Ballet and Royal Opera performances (subject to availability)
  • Take part in ongoing learning opportunities

Volunteer Activities

  • Welcome and greet visitors
  • Share information and answer questions
  • Give directions within the building and Covent Garden area to help visitors and audiences find their way around
  • Help to manage queues and spaces at busy times
  • Assist Front of House staff in keeping everyone safe
  • Help visitors to enjoy our website using our tablet or their own mobile device
  • Assist with ensuring that tour groups remain together during their visit

Hours or Day(s)

Volunteer sessions are booked flexibly by completing an availability form for the coming month and receiving confirmation by email of the sessions you have been scheduled for.

Volunteer sessions usually take place between 11:45-18:15, Monday to Sunday. Sessions last 3.5 hours.

Skills and Personal Qualities

We welcome volunteers who are:

  • Available to volunteer 2-4 times a month for at least 6 months
  • Friendly and enthusiastic
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Team players
  • Proactive and able to follow instructions
  • Able to learn, retain and share information about the Royal Opera House and Covent Garden
  • Able to keep calm during busy times
  • Confident communicating in English
  • Respectful of the boundaries of the volunteer role
  • Committed to our values: Treat each other with Respect, Be Open and Value the Highest Standards

We particularly want to hear from you if you are:

  • Confident using a smartphone/tablet for web browsing
  • Keen to communicate with a diverse range of people including families with young children, school groups, and older people.

The minimum age requirement for this volunteer role is 18.

You don`t need experience or knowledge of ballet or opera to join the team. If you have access needs, we can adjust a volunteer role to suit you.

Volunteer Expenses

Volunteers can claim reimbursement of agreed out-of-pocket travel expenses (up to £13.50 a day) and refreshments (up to £4 if volunteering for more than 4 hours).
