Buying and Merchandising Manager (Maternity Leave Contract)

Fixed term contract running from September 30th 2024 to March 30th 2025

£40,000 - £45,000 per annum, pro rata for contract length and dependent on experience

Full time: 40 hours per week

The Royal Opera House continues to lead the way in opera, ballet, music, and dance. Our Audiences and Commercial division play a vital role in the success of the Royal Opera House, telling the story of the organisation and encouraging people to engage with us - whether by attending a performance, seeing a live screening at the cinema, streaming a performance online, or coming in to enjoy the shop, bars, and restaurants in our iconic Covent Garden building.

As we expand our commercial opportunities, the Retail team have a critical role to play. We are currently looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Buying and Merchandising Manager to join us on a fixed term contract with the remit to drive forwards our product offerings within store, particularly over the lucrative Golden Quarter, identifying key product lessons learnt and delivering the sales and profit for Retail in line with the Retail forecast. Working closely with a range of internal and external stakeholders, you will be adept at maintaining strong relationships and working collaboratively and creatively to maximise product launches, and sales and marketing opportunities.

Our ideal candidate will be an effective leader, committed to developing their direct report and willing to share their knowledge and expertise. They will be able to foster relationships with new suppliers and peer organisations in the sector to benchmark and enhance the ROH offering. They will be able to demonstrate:

  • Significant experience of monitoring and reporting on sales and profitability of product ranges and levels of demand, for both in-store and on-line sales
  • The ability to manage a broad range of products and portfolio of suppliers, planning lead times required to take delivery and promote new products and generate sales
  • Excellent relationship management and development skills; ability to negotiate with suppliers when required
  • Experience in managing and developing direct report and creating a strong team ethic
  • Strong workload management skills, with the ability to manage own time and deliver activities as planned
  • A strategic approach, with experience developing product strategies that will support growth in customers and sales
