Scenic Art Apprentice

Fixed term contract from September 2013 - August 2015

40 hours per week

As part of our innovative scheme to provide apprenticeships across the Royal Opera House and with the generous support of the Derek Butler Trust, we are pleased to be able to offer a Scenic Art Apprenticeship.

The apprentice will be based at our brand new, purpose built, state-of-the-art 3,000 sq metre building in Purfleet, Essex. The Royal Opera House produces some of the best opera and ballet in the world and the Scenic Art team at the workshop is responsible for painting, repairing and modifying scenery for The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet Companies and the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

As a Scenic Art Apprentice, you will learn and develop a wide range of scenic painting skills and techniques and assist the team to realize set designs. You will be taught on-the-job but you will also be released to undertake specialist short training courses to develop your knowledge and practices. Towards the end of the apprenticeship there will be an opportunity to spend time on a placement at another venue. The apprentice will be assigned a mentor for the two years who will work with them, helping them to achieve their full potential.

The successful applicant must:

  • Have completed or be currently completing a foundation course in Art and Design.
  • Be able to demonstrate strong drawing skills
  • Demonstrate an interest in developing a career as a theatrical scenic artist.
  • Be able to work well within a team.
  • Demonstrate the ability and interest in learning new skills.
  • Have a helpful, positive and flexible approach and attitude.
  • To be eligible for this apprenticeship, applicants must be 18 years old or over at 2 September 2013 and must have work authorization for the UK. The successful applicant will be paid 2.5% above the national minimum wage relevant to their age. The apprentice`s college fees will also be paid by the Royal Opera House.
