Scenic Art Apprentice
Fixed term contract for 2 years (September 2015 - August 2017)
Full-time (40 hours per week) - based in Purfleet, Essex
The Royal Opera House produces some of the best opera and ballet in the world. Our employees who work behind the scenes are as important to our opera and ballet productions as those who perform on stage.
As part of our innovative scheme to provide apprenticeships across the Royal Opera House and with the generous support of the Derek Butler Trust, we are pleased to be able to offer a Scenic Art Apprenticeship.
The apprentice will be based at our purpose built, state-of-the-art 3,000 sq metre building in Purfleet, Essex. The Royal Opera House produces some of the best opera and ballet in the world and the Scenic Art team at the workshop is responsible for painting, repairing and modifying scenery for The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet Companies and the Birmingham Royal Ballet.
As a Scenic Art Apprentice, you will learn and develop a wide range of scenic painting skills and techniques and assist the team to realize set designs. You will be taught on the job but you will also be released to undertake specialist short training courses to develop your knowledge and practices. Towards the end of the apprenticeship there will be an opportunity to spend time on a placement in another venue or commercial studios. The apprentice will be assigned a mentor for the two years who will work with them, helping them to achieve their full potential.
The successful applicant must:
- Be self-motivated to acquire new skills and knowledge.
- Good practical and problem solving abilities.
Be able to demonstrate an interest in developing a career as a theatrical scenic artist.
Be able to work well within a team.
The successful applicant will be paid £14,290 per annum, with a 2.5% rise after successful completion of the first 12 months. The apprentice`s training fees will also be paid by the Royal Opera House. Applicants must be 18 years old or over on 1 September 2015 and have work authorization for the UK.
