Costume Performance Support and Footwear Apprentice

Fixed-term contract for 2 years (September 2015 - August 2017)

Full-time (48 hours per week).

The Royal Opera House produces some of the best opera and ballet in the world. Our employees who work behind the scenes are as important to our opera and ballet productions as those who perform on stage.

As part of our innovative scheme to provide apprenticeships across our back-stage departments and with the generous support of the Derek Butler Trust, we are pleased to offer a Costume Performance and Footwear Apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship will be based in the Costume Performance Support Department (running wardrobe). This primary objective of this department is to provide costumes and footwear for all Royal Opera House productions, preparing artists for the stage from top to toe. This includes assisting costume supervisors with the preparation and execution of fittings, dressing, emergency repairs and general maintenance, and undertaking the refurbishment of costumes (including footwear) for a broad range of artists for all performances, revivals, hires and media related work of The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera.

The apprentice will study for a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Theatre Support (Costume and Wardrobe). The qualification will be delivered by LeSoCo with the majority of the learning required to achieve the qualification undertaken in the workplace.

While previous experience is not essential, applicants should be able to demonstrate:

  • An interest in period costume and /or footwear, and in backstage theatre.
  • Excellent people skills and appropriate discretion, sensitivity, and robustness of attitude in meeting the needs of high profile performing artists.
  • A flexible approach to working varied shifts, and sometimes long hours in order to follow a production.
  • Good practical and problem solving abilities.

The successful applicant will be paid £17,148 per annum with a 2.5% rise after successful completion of the first 12 months. The apprentice`s college fees will also be paid by the Royal Opera House. Applicants must be 18 years old or over on 1 September 2015 and have work authorization for the UK.

Our apprenticeships are intended for those wishing to pursue a vocational pathway into backstage theatre, and offer the opportunity to achieve Level 2 and/or Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to GCSE (grade A* - C) and A Level). If you already have a degree or other equivalent higher education qualification, you will not be eligible for consideration for this scheme.
